At SARS Cymru, we believe that a truly safe community is an informed and empowered one. While the responsibility for national security lies with the professional & government services, public vigilance is a vital part of the UK’s shield.
Understanding the current threat landscape allows us to remain alert without being alarmed. This guide explains how to monitor official sources to ensure the information you receive is accurate and timely.
Understanding the Threat Levels
The UK's terror threat level is an assessment of the likelihood of a terrorist attack. There are five levels, set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) and MI5:
LOW: An attack is highly unlikely
MODERATE: An attack is possible but not likely
SUBSTANTIAL: An attack is likely
SEVERE: An attack is highly likely
CRITICAL: An attack is highly likely in the near future
Current Status: As of March 2026, the National Threat Level for the UK remains SUBSTANTIAL, meaning an attack is considered likely.
Official Sources for Monitoring
To avoid misinformation or "fake news" often found on social media, always refer to these primary official channels:
MI5 (The Security Service)
MI5 is the definitive source for the current threat level. Their website provides a clear indicator on the homepage and a historical record of changes.
Website: mi5.gov.uk/threat-levels
GOV.UK
The central government portal provides updates from the Home Office. This is the best place to find information on how the threat level affects government policy and public guidance.
Website: gov.uk/terrorism-national-emergency
ProtectUK
A collaborative platform between Counter Terrorism Policing and the government, ProtectUK offers real-time news, a dedicated app, and specific advice for businesses and community organisers on how to harden security based on the current level.

How to Report Suspicious Activity
If you see something that doesn't feel right, your "gut feeling" could be a vital piece of intelligence. Use the following channels to report:
Emergency: Always call 999 if there is an immediate threat to life or a crime in progress.
Anti-Terrorist Hotline: Call 0800 789 321 to report suspicious activity or concerns confidentially.
Online Reporting: Use the ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) website at gov.uk/ACT to report non-urgent concerns or suspicious online content.
The Dragon Commitment
SARS Cymru acts as a bridge between the public and statutory services. We monitor these official updates around the clock to ensure our community responders and the people of Wales are kept informed of any significant changes that may impact local safety - we call this the Dragon Commitment.
