The UK Government has intensified its repatriation efforts for British nationals following a week of significant regional escalation and airspace closures across the Middle East.

With tens of thousands of passengers still stranded due to missile attacks and flight cancellations, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has launched new measures to help citizens return home safely.

1. New Booking Portal for Dubai Flights

As of Sunday, March 8, the FCDO has opened a dedicated booking portal for British nationals currently in Dubai. This system is designed to streamline the process for those wishing to access government-chartered flights.

  • Prioritisation: Seats are being prioritised for those identified as most vulnerable.

  • Action Required: If you are in the UAE and wish to leave, you should register your interest immediately via the official GOV.UK travel advice page or the portal link provided in FCDO alerts.

⚠️ Important: Do not travel to Dubai International Airport (DXB) unless you have received a direct confirmation from the FCDO that you have a secured seat.

2. Charter Flight Details & Eligibility

The UK Government is chartering commercial flights to depart from Dubai starting early this week (subject to the security situation on the ground).

  • Eligibility: The flights are open to British nationals, their spouses or partners, and children under the age of 18.

  • Cost: There will be a charge for these flights.

  • Documentation: All passengers must have valid travel documents. Non-UK national dependents must have valid visas or permission to enter the UK.

3. Regional Travel Advice: "Against All But Essential Travel"

The FCDO has upgraded its travel advice for the United Arab Emirates to advise against all but essential travel. This change follows reports of increased missile and drone activity in the region.

  • Regional Risks: Tensions remain high across the Gulf. British nationals in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE are urged to register their presence with the FCDO to receive direct SMS and email updates regarding airspace changes and security alerts.

  • Oman Extraction: For those unable to fly from the UAE, the government has been using Muscat, Oman, as a primary "safe extraction point." Several charter flights have already landed at London Stansted from Muscat.

4. Guidance for Those Currently in the UAE

If you are currently in the UAE, the FCDO recommends the following:

  • Shelter and Movement: Follow the instructions of local UAE authorities. Limit movements to essential journeys only.

  • Safety Precautions: Stay away from areas around military or security facilities. In the event of alerts, stay indoors and away from windows.

  • Commercial Flights: While some airlines (like Emirates and Etihad) have resumed limited schedules, capacity is extremely tight. Always check your flight status with your airline before leaving for the airport.

5. What to do next

  • Register Your Presence: If you haven’t already, sign up at GOV.UK to ensure the embassy knows your location.

  • Monitor Official Channels: Follow @FCDOGovUK on X (formerly Twitter) and monitor the FCDO website for real-time updates.

  • Emergency Contact: British nationals requiring urgent consular assistance should call the nearest embassy or the FCDO in London at +44(0)2070085000.
