Community Safety Weekly Brief

This week’s focus for Wales is on managing a transition from mild, unsettled weather to a potential late-week wintry snap, alongside significant rail and road maintenance across the country.


🌤 Weather: Rain, Then a Wintry Turn

The week begins mild but will see a sharp shift in conditions by Friday.

  • Current Conditions (Wales): It is currently 7°C (feels like 3°C) with mostly cloudy skies and a 16 mph wind from the southwest.

  • Early Week: Monday is unsettled with light rain and a high of 8°C. Tuesday and Wednesday will be drier and finer with sunny spells; Wednesday could see highs reach 12°C.

  • Weekend Alert: A significant change is expected by Friday, March 6. Forecast models indicate a potential "blizzard" or wintry flurries moving across South Wales, including Swansea, with temperatures potentially dropping to -4°C in some areas and snow settling by the afternoon.


🚗 Travel & Transport Alerts

Major infrastructure works are affecting both rail and road networks this week.

Rail Disruptions (Transport for Wales & GWR):

  • South Wales Metro: Extensive bus replacement services are in operation between Cardiff Central and Bargoed/Rhymney due to ongoing transformation works.

  • Cardiff Area: Rail replacement buses are also running between Cardiff Central and Penarth, Barry Island, Maesteg, and Bridgend (certain times apply).

  • Late Night Connectivity: Several late-evening services from Portsmouth and London Paddington will terminate at Newport, with onward bus replacements to Cardiff.


Road & Motorway Alerts:

  • M4 Motorway: Overnight closures (20:00–06:00) are scheduled for Eastbound J26 (Malpas) and Westbound J24–J28 through mid-week.

  • Severn Bridges: The M48 Severn Bridge will be closed Westbound from 20:00 Friday, March 6, until 06:00 Monday, March 9.

  • A-Roads: 

    • A4232: Eastbound closed at M4 J33 (Capel Llanilltern) nightly until March 7.

    • A465 (Heads of the Valleys): Multiple night closures for maintenance between Neath and Llandarcy and Abergavenny to Gilwern.

    • A483: Road closed at Llandovery for resurfacing starting Saturday, March 7.


🏠 Community Safety & Awareness

  • Active Travel Works: Footpath widening and safety improvements are beginning in Llandrindod Wells and Llangattock. Please be mindful of pedestrians and temporary signage in these areas.

  • Road Safety Operation: North Wales Police are continuing Op Tramline, using unmarked HGVs to monitor driver behavior on major routes like the A55. Ensure you are not using handheld devices while driving.

  • Environmental Governance: A new landmark Environmental Bill has passed the Senedd, establishing the Office of Environmental Governance Wales to oversee nature protection.
